Lakeer

Main woh mehfil hoon jisme shayar bhi aur kavi bhi
Main woh wadi hoon jisme behta Sutlej bhi aur Ravi bhi.
Main Hindu bhi hoon aur Mussulman bhi
Dil mein Allah bhi aur Ram bhi
Zubaan pey khuda bhi aur bhagwan bhi.
Hath mein Gita bhi aur Koran bhi
Aane walon ko seenay say laga kay karta hoon salaam
Jaane walon ko jhuk jhuk kay kahta hoon ram ram.

Choomta hoon us zameen ko jisme ho apni tehzeeb ka nishaan
Farak to sirf mazhab ka hai aakhir hum hain to ek hee insaan.

Sadion ki baad thaan liya pyar ko chhod kar nafrat ko galay lagainge
Woh waqt kab aaiyega jab hum nafrat ko chhod kar mohabbat ko aazmainge?
Yeh dushmani ki vajah na nafrat hai nah mazhab hai
Shaiyed yeh to siyasat aur dhande say juri kayamat hai.

Mere rabba: dar pay aaen hai tere bun ke ek mehman.
Ab khatam kar hamara yeh imtehaan.
Baksh de hamein dosti ka ek paigam
Dua karta hoon ke ab dono ko galay say mila de
Aur zameen ki lakeer ko bhula kar hamein ek bana de.

Line

I am that musical gathering, in which I am both a shayar and kavi
I am that valley, through which flows the rivers Sutlej and Ravi.
I am a Hindu and a Mussulman
In my heart I have Allah as well as Ram,
With the same tongue I say khuda as well as bhagwan.
In my hands I carry Gita as well as Koran,
I greet people with a salaam, and bid farewell by saying ram ram.

I kiss whatever ground carries the mark of my culture,
The only difference is religion; after all we are the same people.

After centuries we determined to embrace hatred instead of love
When will that time come, when we give up hatred and give chance to love?
The reason of our enmity is neither mutual hatred nor religion;
Perhaps it is simply hard times propelled by politics and business.

Oh, My God: we have come to your door as a guest.
Please bring an end to this test.
Bless us with the message of friendship,
We pray to you to bring us together
Let us forget the dividing line and make us whole again.

An Artificial Line

This poem is dedicated to my lifelong friend, Madan Arora. We often talk about our desire as Punjabis to see unity between Hindus and Muslims in India and throughout the world. We are one people and one culture, that transcends our religious differences.
